The Bugged-Out Gut: Could Hidden Gut Bacteria Imbalances Be Driving Your IBS Symptoms?

After more than 20 years in clinical practice, sitting across from thousands of patients and listening to their stories, one thing has become very clear…

Most people with gut symptoms are not lacking effort — they're lacking the right direction.

They've tried the diets.
They've removed foods.
They've been given labels like IBS, without ever being told why their body is reacting the way it is.

And this is where the frustration begins.

Because when you don't understand what's driving your symptoms, you end up stuck in a cycle of guessing, restricting, and hoping something will work.

Over time, I started to notice patterns.

The same clusters of symptoms…
The same triggers…
The same underlying dysfunctions showing up again and again.

This is what led me to develop my 5 Gut Types — a simple but powerful way to understand what's really happening inside your gut.

Because when you understand your gut type, everything starts to make sense.

Your symptoms are no longer random.
Your triggers are no longer confusing.
And most importantly — you finally have a clear direction on what needs to be addressed.

In this blog series, I'm introducing you to each of the 5 Gut Types, so you can start recognising your own pattern.

This is the fifth and final gut type in the series — and for many people, it's the one they've heard the most about, but often understand the least.

The Bugged-Out Gut Type

The Bugged-Out Gut is all about the trillions of microorganisms that live within your digestive system.

Most people have heard of the gut microbiome, we now even have ads talking about the importance of our dogs' microbiome!!

We know there are "good bacteria" and "bad bacteria." But what many don't realise is that the issue isn't usually about having “bad bacteria” (although some people do have an infection- think gastro). In chronic cases it’s more often about balance and when the microbiome is out of balance, we call this dysbiosis or overgrowth.

Your gut is designed to contain a diverse ecosystem of bacteria, fungi, and other microbes that help support digestion, immunity, nutrient production, and overall health.

Your Gut Is Home to an Entire Ecosystem

Think of your gut like a garden. When the right plants are thriving, the garden flourishes and weeds find it harder to take over.

The same thing can happen within your digestive tract. Certain microbes may become too abundant and can take advantage of a change in the environment. A classic example is getting an overgrowth of candida and getting “thrush” after a course of antibiotics.

This happens because antibiotics can reduce the number of Lactobacillus species, as well as kill the infection you are taking the antibiotic for. Lactobacillus species are one of the main groups that keep candida or fungal species in check.

Disruptions in the microbiome, can also lead to the following, which I class as the Bugged-Out Gut Type:

  • Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)

  • Gut dysbiosis

  • Fungal overgrowths

  • Opportunistic bacteria

  • Post-infectious gut changes

The important thing to understand is that these imbalances don't happen in isolation. They often develop because another gut dysfunction has already created the perfect environment for them. This is also why I shared the Bugged- Out Gut Type last, as often you have the other gut types before this one develops.

Common Signs of a Bugged-Out Gut

People with this gut type often tell me:

"Everything I eat seems to cause gas."

Or:

"I wake up flat, but by the end of the day I look six months pregnant."

Why Food Often Gets Blamed

This is where many people become confused and start painting themselves into a corner. They start removing foods one by one, after it causes severe bloating or gas.

Gluten.
Dairy.
Onion.
Garlic.
Fruit.
Legumes.

And while some of these foods may genuinely trigger symptoms...the food is not the problem as such, it’s what these bacterial overgrowths do with the food you eat.

Many of the foods blamed for IBS symptoms are actually highly fermentable foods. In a healthy gut, these foods may be tolerated quite well. But in a Bugged-Out Gut, they can become fuel for microbial activity.

The result? More fermentation and gas being produced leading to painful bloating & distension & looking 6 months pregnant by the end of the day.

Why This Gut Type Often Keeps You Stuck with IBS Symptoms

One of the most frustrating things about microbial imbalances is that they can seem to improve temporarily, only to return again.

This is because the microbes themselves can shift or change with any changes you make to diet & supplements, it’s also important to use high quality testing, so you know what you need to treat AND it’s also important to know the bacteria imbalances are often only part of the story.

If someone has:

  • Low digestive fire

  • Poor gut motility

  • A compromised gut barrier

  • Chronic nervous system stress

Then the environment that allowed the imbalance to develop may still be present. This is why I teach that the Gut Types are connected and you can have a mix of the 5 that need to be treated.

The Biggest Mistake I See

Why Understanding Your Gut Type Matters

The Bugged-Out Gut is one of the most talked-about areas in gut health today.

Yet many people still don't understand why they developed microbial imbalances in the first place.

That's why understanding your gut type or combination of gut types matters.

Because it helps answer questions like:

  • Why do I react to certain foods?

  • Why does my bloating keep returning?

  • Why haven't previous approaches worked?

  • What might my symptoms actually be trying to tell me?

When you understand the pattern, you stop feeling like your body is working against you.

And you begin seeing a path forward, especially when paired with professional guidance.

Bringing The 5 Gut Types Together

Over the course of this blog series, we've explored:

🔥 The Low Fire Gut – where digestion is weak & struggles to break food down properly.

🚦 The Stuck Gut – where movement through the digestive tract becomes sluggish.

🛡️ The Leaky Barrier Gut – where the gut lining becomes more reactive and sensitive.

🧠 The Stressed Gut – where nervous system dysfunction impacts digestive function.

🦠 The Bugged-Out Gut – where microbial imbalances contribute to poor function.

Many people will see themselves in more than one of these.

And that's completely normal.

Because gut dysfunction is rarely caused by a single issue.

The real power comes from understanding which patterns are driving your symptoms.

Ready to Discover Your Gut Type?

If you've been reading this series and recognising yourself throughout the different gut types, you're exactly who I created the Tummy Rescue Hub for.

Because while understanding your gut type is the first step...

Knowing what to do next is where the real transformation happens.

Inside the Tummy Rescue Hub and my consultations, I help people uncover the underlying drivers behind their symptoms and understand how the different Gut Types fit together.

Because when you stop guessing and start understanding your gut, you can finally move on with treating the cause of your symptoms, to resolve the pain, extreme bloating & regain food freedom.

I am Danielle Elliott a qualified Naturopath and the owner of Tummy Rescue.

I have been helping kids & adults improve their health for over 20 years, with the last 16 years concentrating on helping patients with any kind of gut disorder. I began focussing on everything gut related after my husband was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. And lucky I did……as my husband and both our kids have Coeliac Disease and my daughter has a dairy protein allergy.

So…. I am well and truly where I am meant to be!

I love being able to help people to soothe and calm their symptoms, investigate the causes and support and improve their gut function.

I also get to write educational pieces to train practitioners and am often interviewed for podcasts and summits, which is another really rewarding part of my work. I love educating people (this is something I do in every consult), because I do believe knowledge is power. It gives you the tools to make the changes you need to!

So, when you opt-in to my E-book, you are beginning on a journey of learning and discovery, of how you can reduce your symptoms of bloating, gas & pain and improve your gut health.

I would be honoured to help you along the way.
