Why the healthcare system is holding you back from resolving your IBS

It's essential to note this statement is me making a broad statement to simplify my article. I am not saying that there are not amazing GPs out there, but the experiences of my patients have been underwhelming and that is exactly why they end up in my clinic or within my membership. The proper management of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) involves a range of factors, and I do not envy the job of the GP.

1. Limited Understanding of IBS:

IBS is a complex condition with no known single cause, making it challenging for healthcare professionals to fully understand its origins. The lack of a clear understanding of the underlying mechanisms of IBS within the medical system can contribute to challenges in developing targeted treatments. Especially when the condition and the underlying causes can vary dramatically between individuals.

2. Only Using Symptomatic Treatments:

Many treatments for IBS focus on managing symptoms rather than addressing the root cause, as the exact cause of IBS is often unclear. Symptomatic treatments may provide relief but may not offer a cure or address the underlying factors contributing to the condition. This means while someone takes the medication things seem under control, but when they stop them, symptoms quickly return. Plus these medications that simply suppress symptoms can also have side effects.

3. Not Testing/Investigating Further:

In some cases, individuals with IBS may feel frustrated due to a perceived lack of thorough testing or investigation into their symptoms. Diagnostic processes for IBS often involve ruling out other conditions with similar symptoms, and this may not always include extensive testing. Or I find many individuals who come and see me have not even had basic tests done. On the other hand, Natural Medicine offers a wide range of functional tests, that can find underlying causes or factors for the symptoms people are experiencing.

4. Lack of Time to Truly Understand Symptoms:

Time constraints during medical appointments may limit the depth of discussions about symptoms, potentially leading to a feeling of not being fully understood. The complex nature of IBS requires more comprehensive discussions and examinations to fully grasp the nuances of an individual's symptoms. Plus as a Naturopath those “weird” and “unique” symptoms you experience give me vital clues.

While these concerns highlight challenges, it's important to recognize that many healthcare professionals are dedicated to helping patients manage their IBS effectively. Collaboration between patients and Western healthcare providers and other professionals like physiotherapists, dieticians, hypnotherapists and naturopaths like me is crucial. And if you feel you are not being heard or your gut concerns are being dismissed, I am here to change that!!

A bit about me!

I am Danielle Elliott a qualified Naturopath and the owner of Tummy Rescue.

I have been helping kids & adults improve their health for over 16 years, with the last 11 years concentrating on helping patients with any kind of gut disorder. I began focussing on everything gut related after my husband was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. And lucky I did……as my husband and both our kids have Coeliac Disease and my daughter has a dairy allergy.

So…. I am well and truly where I am meant to be!

I love being able to help people to soothe and calm their symptoms, investigate the causes and support and improve their gut function.

I also get to write educational pieces to train practitioners and am often interviewed for podcasts and summits, which is another really rewarding part of my work. I love educating people (this is something I do in every consult), because I do believe knowledge is power. It gives you the tools to make the changes you need to!

So, when you opt-in to my E-book, you are beginning on a journey of learning and discovery, of how you can reduce your symptoms of bloating, gas & pain and improve your gut health.

I would be honoured to help you along the way.

Danielle xoxo
