Could Histamine Intolerance Be Behind Your Gut Symptoms?

If you’ve been told you have IBS, suffer from unexplained bloating, get frequent headaches, or feel anxious after eating, you might be dealing with something that often flies under the radar: Histamine Intolerance.

Most people have heard of histamine in the context of allergies—hello, hay fever season—but histamine also plays a major role in digestion, immune function, and even hormone regulation. The problem starts when your body can’t break histamine down properly, and it begins to build up. That’s when symptoms start creeping in.

The Telltale Signs of Histamine Intolerance

Histamine intolerance can mimic a wide range of health issues, which is why it's so commonly missed or misdiagnosed. Here are some of the key symptoms to look out for:

Gut-Based Symptoms:

  • Bloating and digestive discomfort

  • Diarrhea or loose stools (especially after certain foods)

  • Reflux or nausea

  • Unpredictable bowel habits

Body-Wide Symptoms:

  • Headaches or migraines

  • Flushing or redness (especially after alcohol or food)

  • Itchy skin, rashes, or hives

  • Nasal congestion or post-nasal drip

  • Anxiety or a “wired but tired” feeling

  • Irregular or painful periods

You might find that symptoms seem to come and go, or only appear after certain meals or during stressful times. That’s because histamine load is cumulative—meaning it's not just one food or trigger, but a build-up over time.

Why It’s So Often Overlooked

Histamine intolerance doesn’t show up on your standard blood tests, and there’s no universally accepted diagnostic marker. While there are tests for histamine or DAO enzyme levels, they’re not always reliable, and they certainly don’t tell the whole story.

This is where working with a clinician who understands histamine intolerance and its root causes makes all the difference. Without the right lens, people are often left jumping from elimination diet to supplement, trying to figure it out on their own—and still feeling stuck.

So What Causes Histamine Intolerance?

While we don’t want to give away all the magic here, what we often see behind histamine intolerance includes:

  • Gut dysbiosis or SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth)

  • Leaky gut and inflammation

  • Nutrient deficiencies

  • Enzyme dysfunction

  • Hormonal imbalances

  • Chronic stress

These are the areas we focus on deeply inside the Tummy Rescue Hub, using a root-cause naturopathic approach that goes well beyond food lists and symptom band-aids.

Natural Medicine Can Help—But Strategy Matters

There are natural ways to support the body in clearing histamine, calming the gut, and relieving symptoms—but it's rarely a one-size-fits-all solution. Throwing random supplements or restrictive diets at the problem can backfire or even make things worse in the long run.

Instead, we work step by step to uncover what your body needs to heal and restore balance. This approach is at the heart of what I teach in the Tummy Rescue Hub.

A bit about me!

I am Danielle Elliott a qualified Naturopath and the owner of Tummy Rescue.

I have been helping kids & adults improve their health for over 16 years, with the last 11 years concentrating on helping patients with any kind of gut disorder. I began focussing on everything gut related after my husband was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. And lucky I did……as my husband and both our kids have Coeliac Disease and my daughter has a dairy allergy.

So…. I am well and truly where I am meant to be!

I love being able to help people to soothe and calm their symptoms, investigate the causes and support and improve their gut function.

I also get to write educational pieces to train practitioners and am often interviewed for podcasts and summits, which is another really rewarding part of my work. I love educating people (this is something I do in every consult), because I do believe knowledge is power. It gives you the tools to make the changes you need to!

So, when you opt-in to my E-book, you are beginning on a journey of learning and discovery, of how you can reduce your symptoms of bloating, gas & pain and improve your gut health.

I would be honoured to help you along the way.

Danielle xoxo
